The usage of e-learning platforms, online lectures and online meetings for academic teaching increased during the Covid-19 pandemic. Lecturers created video lectures, screencasts, or audio podcasts for online learning. The Hochschul-Assistenz-System (HAnS) is a learning experience platform that uses machine learning (ML) methods to support students and lecturers in the online learning and teaching processes. HAnS is being developed in multiple iterations as an agile open-source collaborative project supported by multiple universities and partners. This paper presents the current state of the development of HAnS on German video lectures.

E-mail phishing attacks are still the number one gateway for attackers. Even when the patch level of a network is up to date, if one employee clicks on a link in a phishing e-mail and enters their credentials on a malicious website or downloads malware, the whole organization might get compromised. Anti-phishing support systems highlight different aspects of an e-mail to help users to detect phishing e-mails. However, little is known about their effectiveness, especially in comparison to each other. This paper presents our experimental design to investigate the efficacy of various support systems. For this purpose, we created a fictional scenario and an interactive tool to display e-mails. In addition, we present our preliminary study with the first results to classify test e-mails in different difficulty levels that serve as a basis for our main study.

Edge computing emerges as a trend, forming a link between the Internet of Things and cloud-based services.

Large-scale edge deployments are already in place today in the context of communication network providers

that offload more and more tasks to the edge to ensure high flexibility and low latencies. By relying on remote

attestation and disk encryption techniques, we design a novel system architecture that protects confidential

data on edge nodes in the case of device theft. Recent vulnerabilities like Ripple20 and Amnesia:33 show the

consequences and costs of critical security bugs stemming from outdated system software. Thus, we design

our system in a way that a node can derive its decryption key if and only if a trusted remote party (e.g., a

network operator) can verify that it is running the latest software. This is a security feature that prevalent

implementations like Linux’s dm-crypt lack. To secure the early-boot communication, we rely on a trusted

execution environment, hardware offloading, and Rust device drivers. We prototype our system on two recent

ARMv8 devices and show that the performance overhead (≈ 2%) and the boot delay (1s) are low. Thus, we

believe that our concept is a meaningful step towards more secure future edge devices.

Linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) crosslinks under irradiation in the range of up to 250 kGy. Crosslinking leads to better chemical and thermal resistance but causes reduction in mechanical performance. To counter this reduction, compounds of LLDPE with thermoplastic elastomers (TPV) were made. Specimens were irradiated with doses reaching from 99 to 231 kGy. Gel content shows a decrease of around 12% for compounds with 20 wt% of TPV compared to pure LLDPE. It is also found that compounds containing 10 wt% TPV experience a 4% higher gel content than predicted. For higher amounts of TPV elongation at break increases from 689% for pure LLDPE to 769% and tensile strength decreases from 31.9 to 30.5 MPa. Under irradiation, a trend to lower elongations and tensile strengths is observed. Elongation at break decreased around 200% and tensile strength around 5 MPa under irradiation. Thermal analysis of TPV showed that while the melting temperature decreases, its crystallinity first rises for doses up to 165 kGy before decreasing. Infrared spectroscopy was used to identify changes in the chemical structure, where evidence of surface oxidation under irradiation is found for all compounds with LLDPE.

Tor is a popular privacy-enhancing technology that allows anonymous communication using onion routing. However, such technologies are only helpful if used; therefore, performance is an important aspect. One of the main performance bottlenecks of Tor is the cross-circuit interference (CCI) problem. Tor multiplexes multiple circuits over a single Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.2 connection if they share a path segment (link). Therefore, they have the same congestion window, which can yield unfair bandwidth allocation. However, there has been little work in understanding this problem in more depth.

This paper investigates the number of simultaneously shared links in the current Tor network, which are the root cause of CCI. We developed a novel shared links simulator called SALSA to investigate this problem. Our results show that 3.7 % of active links are shared, and the involving Onion Routers (ORs) have the most common bandwidth capabilities. Additionally, we show that the internal circuits and exit policy influence the CCI problem. Furthermore, we model the number of shared links when the demand grows further and show that the number of shared links can go up to 16 %. Finally, we run Shadow simulations with a 25 % downscaled Tor network and show that a network without shared links is faster.

Breaking the routine: spatial hypertext concepts for active decision making in recommender systems

Recommender Systems are omnipresent in our digital life. Most notably, various media platforms guide us in selecting videos, but recommender systems are also used for more serious goals, such as news selection, political orientation and work decisions. As argued in this survey and position article, the paradigm of recommendation-based feeds has changed user behaviour from active decision making to rather passively following recommendations and accepting possibly suboptimal choices that are deemed “good enough”. We provide a historic overview of media selection, discuss assumptions and goals of recommender systems and identify their shortcomings, based on existing literature. Then, the perspective changes to hypertext as a paradigm for structuring information and active decision making. To illustrate the relevance and importance of active decision making, we present a use case in the field of TV or media selection and (as a proof of concept) carried over to another application domain: maintenance in industry. In the discussion section, we focus on categorising these actions on a spectrum of “system-1” (fast and automated) tasks and “system-2” (critical thinking) tasks. Further, we argue how users can profit from tools that combine active (spatial) structuring and categorising with automatic recommendations, for professional tasks as well as private, leisure activities.

Multi-stage marketing (MSM), a market-driving strategy applicable in multi-stage industrial markets to shape customer preferences, is still an underresearched field. While the strategic and operational dimensions of MSM have already been recognized and researched, MSM's processual dimension, i.e. its implementation, management and adaptation, has so far gone unnoticed. Based on a comprehensive case study of a German component and consumables manufacturer, this paper will derive in an exploratory research approach first insights on the determinants of a successful implementation and management of MSM, as well as the impact of market dynamics on the design of a firm's salesforce. The results indicate that a supplier applying MSM has to have unique resources and capabilities at its disposal, which are performance-relevant for the downstream market stages and allow for continuous organizational adaptation. Moreover, firms need to complement their traditional salesforce with additional indirect customers/stakeholder-oriented sales units for enabling MSM at the other market stages.

The citizen science project SelEe (‘Researching rare diseases in a citizen science approach‘) aims to research rare diseases in collaboration with citizens by using digital applications. SelEe adopts a participatory approach as it is important to recognise the active role of patients and their families as informed partners. They are often the experts on their own disease. Similarly, involving citizens beyond those affected can increase the visibility and understanding of rare diseases. Citizens can contribute their strengths, engage socially and learn new knowledge about digital apps, the diseases and their research. Engaging citizens in a continuous exchange of information as well as developing digital applications for research can make research more accessible to citizens while strengthening research and its relevance.
